Verona's largest church. The Pisanello fresco inside is the most important Gothic painting in Italy
Santa Anastasia
Santa Anastasia is the largest church in Verona — a 13th-century Dominican church with a cavernous nave and two famous stone hunchbacks by the holy-water stoups at the entrance. Most visitors to Ponte Pietra, fifty metres away, walk past without entering. Inside, above the Pellegrini chapel, is the Pisanello fresco 'St. George and the Princess' — painted around 1436 and considered the most important example of International Gothic painting in Italy. Pisanello was one of the last great Gothic painters, working just as the Renaissance was beginning. The fresco is damaged and incomplete, which makes it more haunting, not less.
Visitor Tip
Don't miss the Pisanello fresco above the Pellegrini chapel — 'St. George and the Princess', the most important example of International Gothic in Italy. It's in an obscure chapel on the right side, easy to miss.
