Piazza dei Signori

Thirty metres from Piazza delle Erbe. Half the tourists. Twice the beauty

Piazza dei Signori

Best Time to VisitLate afternoon or evening — when it empties out
Suggested Duration20–30 minutes

Piazza dei Signori is thirty metres from Piazza delle Erbe, separated only by a covered archway. It's ringed by a complete ensemble of medieval and Renaissance palaces — the Palazzo del Capitano, the Loggia del Consiglio, the old palace of the della Scala lords. In the centre, a statue of Dante who stayed in Verona as a political exile and was received by Cangrande I della Scala. The piazza has cafes at normal prices. It has the Torre dei Lamberti. It has almost half the tourists of the neighbouring piazza. Nobody can explain why.

Visitor Tip

Walk through the covered passage from Piazza delle Erbe. Have a coffee at one of the cafes — the same price as anywhere else in Italy, unlike Piazza delle Erbe. Look up at the loggia. The Dante statue in the center was placed in 1865.
