Gothic tombs of Verona's medieval lords. Outside, free, astonishing
Arche Scaligere
The della Scala dynasty ruled Verona from 1262 to 1387, and when they died they built their tombs right in the middle of the city — Gothic canopied monuments with equestrian statues on top, enclosed by a wrought-iron fence, on a narrow street between the church of Santa Maria Antica and the Piazza dei Signori. You can see them for free through the fence. They're one of the most extraordinary examples of Gothic funerary art in Italy. The tourists at Casa di Giulietta three streets away have no idea they exist.
Visitor Tip
You can see them for free through the iron fence. Don't bother paying for entry if you just want to look — the outside view is actually better. Read the Latin inscriptions on the tombs.
