How to Visit Verona Without Overwhelming It
Verona sees over 3 million tourists a year in a city of 250,000 residents. Here's how to visit responsibly.
Time your visit. Come in shoulder season (April–May or September–October) for better weather, fewer crowds, and lower prices.
Spread out. Cross the river to Veronetta, walk west to San Zeno, explore the hills above the Roman Theatre. Better experience, less pressure on the hotspots.
Eat local. Skip Piazza Bra. Walk two blocks in any direction for better food at half the price. Ask for pastissada de caval, risotto all'Amarone, or tortellini di Valeggio.
Stay longer. A day trip from Venice means you see nothing but crowds. Stay two nights minimum — mornings and evenings are when the city is most itself.
Support local. Buy from artisan shops, drink local wine, book local guides. Your money goes further when it reaches the people who make Verona special.
